Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped (about 6 to 7 cups)
  • 1.5 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 10 ounces beef or turkey sausage, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1.25 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1.5 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 orange bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2.5 teaspoons all-purpose seasoning
  • 0.75 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
  • 2 to 3 cups cooked white rice, for serving Can substitute with cauliflower rice for a low-carb option.

Instructions

Cooking

  • Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced sausage and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring, until browned.
  • Add the shrimp to the skillet. Season with smoked paprika, Cajun seasoning, and lemon pepper. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often, until the shrimp are just pink.
  • Stir in the onion, red bell pepper, orange bell pepper, and garlic. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until the vegetables begin to soften.
  • Add the chopped cabbage and butter. Stir well, then cover the skillet and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cabbage softens down.
  • Remove the lid and season with all-purpose seasoning, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir and cook uncovered for 3 to 5 minutes so flavors blend and moisture cooks off.
  • Serve hot on its own or spooned over warm cooked white rice.

Notes

Do not overcook the shrimp as they turn rubbery if left too long. For a different flavor, make it with chicken sausage or andouille. You can also add sliced potatoes or sweet potatoes for a heartier skillet. If desired, top with a squeeze of lemon or fresh parsley before serving.
