Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3-4 pieces Vidalia sweet onions Use sweet Vidalia onions for mild, sweet flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter Cut into eight even portions.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Adjust according to preference.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano

Cheeses

  • 1 cup Italian blend cheese, finely shredded Use freshly shredded cheese for best melt and texture.
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, finely shredded
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, finely shredded Parmesan adds sharpness, but can be omitted.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Clean and peel the Vidalia sweet onions. Slice them into rounds approximately ¼ inch thick; do not separate the rounds into individual onion rings.
  • Spread the onion evenly across the base of the prepared baking dish.
  • Season the onion rings with salt, garlic powder, and oregano.
  • Cut the butter into roughly eight even portions or pats. Distribute these butter pats evenly across the seasoned onion rings in the baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the Italian blend cheese and cheddar cheese evenly over the onion rings. Finish with a final topping of shredded Parmesan cheese.

Baking

  • Place the baking dish into the preheated oven. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the cheese is browned and bubbling.

Serving

  • Serve Tennessee Onions hot from the oven. They work as a side to beef, chicken, or a burger, and they are great on toasted bread.
  • Spoon onto a platter and serve family style. Place on top of grilled meat for extra flavor.

Notes

Cool the dish to room temperature before storing. Cover tightly and keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat: warm in a 350°F oven for 10–15 minutes until heated through. You can also microwave single portions for 1–2 minutes.
