Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef Preferably 80/20 for better flavor.
  • 4 slices bread (rye or sourdough) Choose your favorite type of bread.
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese Can substitute with Swiss cheese.
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced For caramelization.
  • 2 tablespoons butter For sautéing and grilling.
  • Salt and pepper to taste For seasoning.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat.
  • Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the sliced onions. Sauté until caramelized, about 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.

Cooking

  • In the same skillet, form the ground beef into balls and smash them down to create patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook the patties for about 2-3 minutes on each side until they are browned and cooked to your desired doneness.
  • Top each patty with a slice of cheddar cheese in the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.

Assembly

  • Assemble the patty melt by placing a patty on one slice of bread, add some caramelized onions, then top with another slice of bread.
  • Melt the remaining butter in the skillet and grill the assembled sandwich on both sides until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve hot and enjoy your Smash Burger Patty Melt!

Notes

Serve hot so the cheese stays melty and the bread crisp. Cool any leftovers to room temperature before storing in the fridge for up to 3 days.
