  • 8 slices slices of bread Use soft, fresh bread for easy cutting.
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened Generously spread on each slice.
  • to taste Salt Sprinkle over buttered side.
  • to taste Pepper Sprinkle over buttered side.
  • as needed Optional fillings (e.g., cucumber, smoked salmon, or egg salad) Choose any combination of fillings.

Preparation

  • Start by spreading a generous amount of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  • Sprinkle a little salt and pepper over the buttered side if desired.
  • Add your choice of filling on the unbuttered side of half the slices.
  • Top with the remaining slices, buttered side facing out.
  • Cut the sandwiches into finger-sized pieces and serve with tea.

Notes

For best texture, serve fresh. Keep fillings thin and even to avoid soggy bread. Chill briefly before cutting for cleaner edges.
