Meatballs in Savory Onion Gravy

Ingredients
  

Meatball Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork) Use lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Use plain or seasoned breadcrumbs.
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese Freshly grated is best.
  • 1 large egg Bind the meat mixture.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Enhances flavor.
  • to taste Salt and pepper Adjust according to preference.

Gravy Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For frying the meatballs.
  • 2 large onions, sliced Cook until caramelized.
  • 2 cups beef broth Adds depth to the gravy.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce For seasoning.
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce Enhances umami flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon thyme Dried or fresh.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional) For thickening the gravy.

Instructions
 

Prepare the meatballs

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  • Form mixture into meatballs.

Brown the meatballs

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add meatballs and cook until browned on all sides.
  • Remove and set aside.

Make the gravy

  • In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook until softened and caramelized.
  • Stir in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, and bring to a simmer.
  • Add meatballs back to the skillet and cover, cooking for about 20 minutes.
  • If thicker gravy is desired, mix cornstarch with a little water and stir into the gravy.

Serve

  • Serve meatballs with gravy over mashed potatoes or pasta.

Notes

Let leftovers cool to room temperature before storing. Place in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Taste and adjust salt or Worcestershire sauce at the end.
