Ingredients

Batter Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Main Ingredients

  • 8 pieces hot dogs
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix together flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk together milk and egg.
  • Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until smooth.
  • Insert wooden sticks into hot dogs.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  • Dip each hot dog in the batter, coating evenly.
  • Fry in hot oil until golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Drain on paper towels and serve with mustard or ketchup.

Notes

Dry the hot dogs well so batter sticks better. Use a tall glass for dipping to coat evenly. Keep oil at 375°F to cook through without burning. Work in small batches so the oil temperature stays steady. If the batter is too thick, add a little milk to thin it.
